Whimsical Painting workshop

Maximize your colour mixing ability with a limited palette which includes warm and cool versions of each primary.

Limited palette: Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light OR Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Quinacridone Rose OR Permanent Rose (for pure pinks and purples), Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue (for turquoise), Titanium white. You can create most colours using this palette. I use M. Graham for its ease of spreading without a need for medium. M. Graham is a reasonably priced paint with fantastic colour and buttery spreadability. Excellent quality paint.

Optional colours:  depending on subject matter:  Magenta (Winsor Newton). Makes a vibrant and versatile purple. I use yellow ochre as a convenience colour.

Brushes: decent quality hog bristle flats. I use the blue H. J.’s or Robert Simmons. Both are available at Delta). Sizes 12, 10, 8, and 5 and 3. Acrylic artists might have different brush choices but be aware that soft floppy brushes don’t move the paint around well unless it’s super thin and we will be painting more thickly.

Canvases: At least one canvas, any proportions. Sizes between 20 x 20 or so gives you room to be a bit more expressive with the brush.

Miscellaneous: sketchbook for working out your ideas, pencil, eraser, paint palette of your choice, thinner (Eco House or Gamsol are good), rags or paper towel, palette knife for mixing paint (not necessary but handy. The venue will provide easels but if you have one you prefer feel free to bring it.

NOTE: I teach oils but if you are an acrylic painter bring the appropriate palette, water and acrylic extender or any acrylic medium you are used to working with.

Bring your lunch and your enthusiasm!
