10th Annual 2021 Aspiring Young Artists Competition Virtual Show
Our first show and competition started in 2013 by Leduc Art Club members Doreen Pyrch and the late Gail Froland and Ingrid Shields. We were looking for a way to get the arts on the forefront of the community in Leduc. We believed that it was important that our youth be encouraged to continue art after high school. We incorporated the student show with our own art show. The first two years of the event were run at the Civic Centre using the atrium as a backdrop for the artwork. In the third year it was decided that the Club would take the show to the people. With thousands of community members frequenting the Leduc Recreation Centre during the Black Gold Rodeo weekend, this was an obvious choice.
Year after year Leduc Art Club makes contact with schools to engage every possible student. As the show has evolved, the Club has received consistent funding from our community the Leduc Performing Arts and Cultural Foundation, Leduc-Nisku Rotary Club, Lions and other community business.
A variety of local, professional artists have juried the show to determine the winners. Through the years, new categories have been added to accommodate the changing arts scene. Grade 5 students in the are invited to participate as a part of Rodeo weekend as well. Classes submit a collection of work that is displayed in the main corridor as well as the big screen. One class will be randomly selected to receive prizes. There is sincere gratitude for the amount of work the teachers put into facilitating this show!
At the beginning we only had 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and a handful of students. We now have 28 categories, expanded on the grades that are allowed to enter with over $2500.00 cash prizes to be won. This year we had students submit from grades 10, 11 and 12 with a total of 134 pieces of amazing art!
