In this workshop, we will explore creative intuitions through experimenting with various tools and ideas to loosen up your mark-making. Carla will provide a demonstration (including colour mixing) and personal coaching to encourage the freedom to follow your own guidance. You will leave with an array of small, layered abstract works on paper.
It’s preferred that participants use acrylic paints. All levels of experience are welcome.
Supplies List
- Gesso
- GAC 100 (or similar medium)
- Masking Tape
- Heavy weight paper (preferably 300 g/m² watercolour paper). 18 x 24 is best. (Note: Some will be provided by the instructor at cost on the day of the workshop)
- A large enough board to tape your paper to
- Acrylic (and water-based) paints, inks, and mediums
- Tools (e.g. Brushes; Breyers; Foam rollers; Rubber edges (like Catalyst spatulas) in any size and shape) Don’t hesitate to bring anything you think would make an interesting mark or shape that you have lying around at home.
- Sketching tools (e.g. Pens; Pencils; Markers; Chunky graphite or charcoal; Stabilo Woodies or other water-based crayons) Anything goes
- Ruler
- Water misting bottle
- Palette to mix paint
- Paper towel
- Apron
- Collage materials (as an extra only)
About the Artist
Carla Lam is an academic refugee turned painter who works in multiple media and favors creative mark making, letting the process inform the subject. Her work is experimental, intuitive, and colour-driven, resulting in emotionally evocative, abstract landscapes.
