Basic Colours
I have these on my palette most of the time. They can make nearly any colour.
I strongly recommend M Graham oil paint. It is a soft, easy-spreading paint that requires no medium. It’s a highly pigmented paint with no fillers—just pigment and walnut oil. Price is average.
-
Cadmium Yellow Light (You don’t need Cad Yellow Medium or Dark, just Cad Yellow Light, which can make a nice Lemon Yellow or Cad Yellow Medium/Dark—if you use M Graham paint. If you use a different brand, get a Lemon Yellow and Cad Yellow or similar yellow.)
-
Yellow Ochre
-
Cadmium Red Light (I recommend Winsor Newton Cad Red Light—they have a cadmium-free version—or Gamblin’s Cad Red Light.)
-
Quinacridone Rose (For clear pinks if you paint flowers.)
-
Quinacridone Magenta (If you’re a purple lover.)
-
Alizarin Crimson Permanent (M Graham’s Alizarin Crimson is not permanent. Use another brand or get Anthraquinone Red, which is a substitute for Graham’s Alizarin. It’s very close in hue and is permanent.)
-
Ultramarine Blue
-
Phthalo Blue
-
Titanium White
Other Supplies
-
Palette of your choice, either glass or disposable paper palettes.
-
Offset palette knife for mixing paint.
-
Thinner (Demco Taltine Odourless Solvent—it’s Canadian-made—or Gamsol, which is a good brand but very expensive).
-
Rags or blue shop paper towel for wiping brushes.
-
Brushes: good quality hog bristle flats or filberts (Robert Simmons or the blue H.J.’s). Sizes: 12, 10, 8, 5, and 3.
-
One to two 8x10 or 9x12 canvases or inexpensive panels.
-
Notebook and pencil for note-taking.
IMPORTANT
If you already have lots of paint, check to see if you have any of the colours listed above. If you haven’t painted in a while and are buying new paint, please do not buy cheap student-grade paint. It’s much harder to work with. My students always switch over to M Graham or other loose, buttery pigments.
Same with brushes: if you have good brushes, bring them. But please don’t buy cheap craft-store brushes. Students always end up buying new brushes because crummy brushes are very hard to work with.
